Bronski Beat was een Britse popgroep, opgericht in 1983.

Op het hoogtepunt van hun succes bestond Bronski Beat uit Jimmy Somerville (zang), Steve Bronski (keyboard en percussie) en Larry Steinbachek (keyboard en percussie). De groep had in 1984 een aantal hits, waarvan Smalltown Boy in Nederland de nummer 1-positie haalde. Nadat Jimmy Somerville de groep had verlaten om de band The Communards op te richten, liep het succes van de groep snel terug. In Nederland werd nog een hit gescoord met Hit that perfect beat.

Bronski Beat maakte deel uit van een aantal Britse popacts, waarvan de leden begin jaren 80 openlijk uitkwamen voor hun homoseksualiteit, samen met acts als Frankie Goes to Hollywood en Erasure.

In 2006 werd door het Zweedse dance-project Supermode de sample van het nummer Smalltown Boy gebruikt voor een dance-nummer genaamd Tell me why, dat Jimmy Somerville op de achtergrond zingt. De Nederlandse gothic rockband The Wounded heeft een cover van Small Town Boy opgenomen voor hun debuutplaat The Art of Grief (2000). In 2002 neemt ook de gothic metalband Paradise Lost een versie van het nummer op voor het album Symbol of Life. Ook de Nederlandse rockband The Hot Stewards speelt een cover van het nummer op hun cd Cover Up (2007).

Steinbachek overleed in december 2016 op 56-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van kanker. Bronski overleed in december 2021, 61 jaar oud.

Bronski Beat were a British synth-pop band formed in 1983 in London, England. The initial lineup, which recorded the majority of their hits, consisted of Scottish musicians Jimmy Somerville (vocals) and Steve Bronski (keyboards, percussion) and English musician Larry Steinbachek (keyboards, percussion). Simon Davolls contributed backing vocals to many songs. Throughout the band's career, Bronski was the only member to appear in every lineup.

Bronski Beat achieved success in the mid-1980s, particularly with the 1984 single "Smalltown Boy", from their debut album, The Age of Consent. "Smalltown Boy" was their only US Billboard Hot 100 single. All members of the band were openly gay and their songs reflected this, often containing political commentary on gay issues. Somerville left Bronski Beat in 1985 and went on to have success as lead singer of the Communards and as a solo artist. He was replaced by vocalist John Foster, with whom the band continued to have hits in the UK and Europe through 1986. Foster left Bronski Beat after their second album, and the band were joined by Jonathan Hellyer before dissolving in 1995.

Steve Bronski revived the band in 2016, recording new material with 1990s member Ian Donaldson. Steinbachek died later that year; Bronski died in 2021. As of 2025, Somerville is the last surviving member of the band's original lineup and one of six surviving members of the band.
