Over the Rainbow (ook bekend als Somewhere over the Rainbow) is een Engelstalig lied uit 1938 gecomponeerd door Harold Arlen, met een tekst van Yip Harburg. Het lied werd geschreven voor de film The Wizard of Oz, waar het gezongen werd door Judy Garland. Het kreeg in 1939 een Academy Award voor beste originele nummer en maakte Garland beroemd.
De tekst laat een jong meisje zien dat graag wil ontsnappen uit de "hopeloze mengelmoes" van de wereld, weg van de treurige regendruppels, naar een mooie nieuwe wereld die voorbij de regenboog zou liggen. Het toont de hoop op het openen van een deur naar een plek waar problemen verdwijnen.
Samen met het nummer White Christmas van Irving Berlin werd het nummer door de Amerikaanse troepen in Europa tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog geadopteerd als symbool voor de Verenigde Staten. Het (op dat moment) verre land, waar het, na jaren van oorlog, net zo zou zijn als voorbij de regenboog. Later werd Garland als homo-icoon omarmd door de homobeweging en werd de regenboog mede door dit lied een LGBT-symbool.
"Over the Rainbow", also known as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", is a ballad by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg. It was written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, in which it was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale.
About five minutes into the film, Dorothy sings the song after failing to get Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and the farmhands to listen to her story of an unpleasant incident involving her dog, Toto, and the town spinster, Miss Gulch (Margaret Hamilton). Aunt Em tells her to "find [her]self a place where [she] won't get into any trouble". This prompts her to walk off by herself, musing to Toto, "Someplace where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat, or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain", at which point she begins singing.
"Over the Rainbow" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland's signature song. It has been included in several all-time lists, and has been covered by several artists in varying languages. In 2017, it was selected for induction into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
