Op 29 september van dat jaar werd het nummer uitgebracht als de tweede single van het album. In de Verenigde Staten bereikte dit nummer de achtste plaats in de Billboard Hot 100 en stond het op de eerste plaats in de R&B-lijsten. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk piekte het nummer op de derde plaats, terwijl het nummer in de Nederlandse Top 40 slechts de achttiende positie behaalde.

The song was written by Allee Willis and Maurice White, based on a music sequence developed by guitarist Al McKay. Initially included as a track for The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1, "September" was very successful commercially and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart, No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The song remains a staple of the band's body of work and has been sampled, covered, remixed, and re-recorded numerous times.

It was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important" in 2018.
