Licensed to Ill is het debuutalbum van de Beastie Boys. Het was het eerste rapalbum dat populair werd onder een mainstream publiek, en was tevens het eerste album van een blanke hiphopgroep. Ook was het het eerste hiphop-album dat in de Billboard charts terechtkwam. Het album wordt door velen gezien als een van de beste hiphop-albums van de jaren 80. In 2003 stond dit album op plaats 217 in de lijst van de 500 beste albums aller tijden (samengesteld door het Rolling Stone magazine).

Op het album werd veel gebruikgemaakt van samples van Led Zeppelin en Black Sabbath. Zo wordt in het nummer Rhymin' & Stealin' gebruikgemaakt van de drumbeat van het Led Zeppelin-nummer When the Levee Breaks en de gitaarriff van het nummer Sweet Leaf van Black Sabbath. Kerry King van thrashmetalband Slayer speelde gitaar in het nummer No Sleep till Brooklyn. Hij kwam ook in de videoclip van hetzelfde nummer voor.

It is one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records to date and was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2015 for shipping over ten million copies in the United States. The album received critical acclaim for its unique musical style, chemistry between the group members, and their stylized rapping. Since its release, Licensed to Ill has been ranked by critics as one of the greatest hip hop and debut albums of all time.

Despite its popularity and success, this would be the group’s only album to be released from Def Jam due to creative differences with producer Rick Rubin, resulting in the group leaving the label to sign with Capitol Records for their next album, Paul's Boutique (1989).
