She Sells Sanctuary is een nummer van de Britse band The Cult. Het is het negende nummer van het album Love uit 1985. Op 13 mei van dat jaar werd het nummer uitgebracht als de eerste single van het album.

Volgens gitarist Billy Duffy werden de effecten in het intro van het nummer het resultaat van het feit dat alle pedalen die gitaareffecten produceren tegelijk aan stonden. De opname werd bewerkt zodat deze effecten te horen zijn, waar in vroege versies het nummer abrupt begint. Het is het laatste nummer dat de oorspronkelijke The Cult-drummer Nigel Preston opnam met de band, aangezien hij niet veel later ontslagen werd vanwege drugsproblemen.

De plaat werd alleen een hit in thuisland het Verenigd Koninkrijk met een 15e positie in de UK Singles Chart, in Ierland met een 27e positie en in Canada met een 11e positie.

Ondanks dat "She Sells Sanctuary" buiten de Britse eilanden geen grote hit werd, komt de plaat wel elk jaar terug in eindejaarshitlijsten.

In Nederland werd de plaat veel gedraaid op Radio 3 en werd een radiohit op de nationale publieke popzender. Vreemd genoeg bereikte de plaat de Nederlandse Top 40 niet, maar bleef 4 weken steken in de Tipparade. De Nationale Hitparade werd wél bereikt met een 35e positie, bijna een jaar na de oorspronkelijke uitgave. De Europese hitlijst op Radio 3, de TROS Europarade, werd niet bereikt.

In België behaalde de plaat géén notering in zowel de Vlaamse Ultratop 50 als de Vlaamse Radio 2 Top 30.

"She Sells Sanctuary" is a song by the English rock band the Cult. It is from their second studio album, Love (1985), and was released as a single on 13 May 1985, peaking at number 15 on the UK singles chart in July of the same year. In March 2023, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded the song a platinum certification for sales and streams of over 600,000. In January 1993, the song was re-released as "Sanctuary MCMXCIII" and experienced chart success once more, matching its original peak on the UK singles chart and entering the top 10 in New Zealand. The song is certified double platinum in Canada and platinum in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

One of the earliest songs written for what would become the Love album, "She Sells Sanctuary" was first performed during the Dreamtime tour in the late 1984 and would become the last song to be recorded with the Cult's longtime drummer, Nigel Preston, who was fired from the band shortly after its release. According to Cult guitarist Billy Duffy, the iconic introduction effects were the result of all the guitar effects pedals being on at the same time. The recording was edited to include the introduction with the effects, whereas earlier versions started the song more abruptly. Duffy says he found a violin bow lying around the studio and started playing the guitar with it "like Jimmy Page" of Led Zeppelin to amuse lead vocalist Ian Astbury, hit every effects pedal he had "to make it sound weirder", and then played the middle section of the song. "And we decided to start the song with that mystical sound. If I hadn't found that violin bow laying around, we wouldn't have gone there," said Duffy.
